IACCB signed a contract with Sentra Peternakan Rakyat (SPR) Mega Jaya on 10 January 2017. The key feature of the partnership is managing cattle with a newly formed farmer group within an intensive cut-and-carry system.
Company | Sentra Peternakan Rakyat (SPR) Mega Jaya |
Year of establishment | 2016 |
Core Activities | Breeding business with profit sharing scheme, Savings and Loan, Farmer shop |
Organization Size | Farmer group with >100 members, this group has 20 local heifers as part of a grant from GoI |
The project started with the funding from Ministry of Agriculture aiming to empower smallholders groups to own and collectively manage a breeding cattle enterprise. The project began with 20 young local heifers in a local style breedlot with 100 local farmers involved. Heifers were however immature and from 2014 to 2016, using traditional feeding and managing systems, herd growth was not achieved.
A 2017 IACCB review of SPR-MJ saw very strong commitment and determination from the farmers and the Ministry of Agriculture. In 2017 IACCB agreed to partner with SPR-MJ and thereafter provided support to build yards and deliver 100 heifers and 3 bulls. Despite the introduction of new management practices by IACCB, poor infrastructure and a lack of farmer cash flow threatened the project. IACCB assisted with funding for feed supplements and improvements to cattle pens which brought costs under control.
Conception rates are now 74% (target is 80% and calf mortalities <10% (target <5%). Short term finance has been found and the SPR has grown to be a formal Koperasi (cooperation).
